Effects of being Gay on your Mental Health.

Studies show that lesbian, gay and bisexual people show higher levels of anxiety, depression and suicidal feelings than heterosexual men and women. Rates of drug and alcohol misuse have also been found to be higher. But the real picture is uncertain because of the reluctance of some patients to disclose their sexuality, and some healthcare staff feeling uncomfortable asking the question.  Poor levels of mental health among gay and bisexual people have often been linked to experiences of homophobic discrimination and bullying. It may not be easy, but getting help if you're feeling stressed, depressed, anxious or suicidal is one of the most important things you can do. Dominic Davies from  Pink Therapy , a mental health support service for lesbian, gay and bisexual people, says: "As LGB people, our mental health is often under attack from various quarters, and sometimes we can find ourselves being our own worst e...

Walking in Nature May Reduce Negativity

Image
Taking a walk outside really can help you clear your head — but only if you go walking in a natural, green place, a small new study suggests. Researchers found that the 19 people in the study who took 90-minute walks in a natural setting had lower levels of negative, repetitive thoughts about themselves, compared with another 19 people who took 90-minute walks in an urban setting. Previous research has linked such thoughts, called rumination, to a heightened  risk of depression  and related conditions. "It was pretty striking that a 90-minute walk had this much of an impact," said study author Gregory Bratman, a doctoral student in the department of biology at Stanford University. The people in the first group took walks near Stanford, in a grassy area with scattered oak trees and shrubs. The people in the comparison group took a walk on the busiest street in nearby Palo Alto, according to the study. To examine the study participants' levels of ruminatio...

Sugary Drinks Kill 184,000 People Every Year

Image
Sugary drinks cause 184,000 deaths worldwide annually, according to a new study. The finding — a revised estimate of numbers  first presented at a scientific meeting in 2013  — represents a tally of deaths from diabetes, heart disease and cancer that scientists say can be directly attributed to the consumption of sweetened sodas, fruit drinks, sports/energy drinks and iced teas. The numbers imply that sugary drinks can cause as many deaths annually as the flu. "It should be a global priority to substantially reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet," said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, senior author of the study and dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Massachusetts.  There is evidence that  sugary drinks contribute to obesity  and that obesity contributes to people's risk of these diseases, Mozaffarian said. Previous studies found that obesity-related diseases cause more than 17 mill...

After taking only small quantities of alcohol, trained typists were tested and their errors increased 40 percent. Only one ounce of alcohol increases the time required to make a decision by nearly 10 percent; hinders muscular reaction by 17 percent; increases errors due to lack of attention by 35 percent. —Paul Harvey Is it biblically permissible for a Christian to drink alcohol? If so, how much? This controversial subject has evoked many passionate opinions among Christians. Why? Is God’s Word silent or in anyway unclear about alcohol? I submit that the Bible is in no way ambiguous when it speaks on alcohol and how it relates to God’s followers. I hope the following study will assist you in forming your own biblically based conclusions on this important subject. Two Opposing Camps Among Christians, there are two primary camps of thought on this se...
